Get your Greenhouse Ready for the Spring

Spring Greenhouse

Spring is a good time to clean your greenhouse to get rid of any pests and diseases it’s harbouring before spring arrives.

This spring, it’s likely to contain far fewer plants than it does at other times of the year, and there’s not too much to do in the garden either, so you’ll have plenty of time.

Get your spring greenhouse started

Choose a dry, sunny, calm day. Remove your plants, tools, and anything else from the greenhouse, making sure you cover delicate plants with fleece to protect them from the cold. Open the door to ventilate the greenhouse, letting the spring air in and allow any water to evaporate.

What you’ll need

  • Gloves
  • Watering can or hose
  • Stiff brush or vacuum
  • Bucket of warm water and diluted detergent
  • Mop or a broom
  • Pressure washer (optional)

How to do it

  • Put on a pair of gloves and clear the guttering by running your hand along with it. Put any debris in your compost bin. Sluice the guttering using a watering can or hose, and check that the pipe isn’t blocked.
  • Brush or vacuum all the dirt and debris from the greenhouse frame and floor. Get into all the corners and anywhere else pests and diseases might hideout.
  • Wash the inside and outside of the windows. Clean windows mean that more light will get in.
  • Wash the floor with a pressure washer, hose, or a bucket of detergent and a mop. Let the floor dry out naturally.

The benefits of having a Spring Greenhouse

If the task of cleaning your spring greenhouse seems too much, think about why you got it in the first place.

  • It keeps your plants protected from the elements in the winter
  • You can grow vegetables all year round, even tomatoes and summer vegetables, especially if you invest in a greenhouse heater
  • If you have a greenhouse, you can do some gardening whatever the weather. Prune some flowers and exotic plants and watch them grow in your greenhouse, even during a cold winter
  • You can make money from your seedlings: If you start some seeds off in your greenhouse in the late winter, you’ll have plenty of seedlings by the time gardeners are looking to start their gardening season. You could sell tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and cucumbers. Check that you’re legally able to do this in your area before you start, however.
  • You can get health benefits: Even when it’s too cold to sit in the garden, you’ll still be able to get some sunlight in your greenhouse this spring, which is great for lifting your mood.
